City Beautiful, City Death (2024)
City Beautiful, City Death is an audio-visual work that embodies the chaotic nature of climate change, specifically rising sea levels in the New England region. The piece uses real Mean Sea Level data for the Boston area to modulate both sound and visuals. Through pixelation, the visuals highlight the ripples of both the ocean and climate inaction, with more and more of the ocean taking over the screen as time progresses. The audio elements mirror this instability, echoing the unsettling rise of the seas—vocal fragments distort, rhythms dissolve, and layers of the natural soundscape swell and recede. “City Beautiful, City Death” serves as both a warning and a reminder of nature’s uncontrollable force, inviting viewers to confront the delicate balance between creation and collapse.
